NAS Meteor Spotting

Alan Meehan

I was one of the fortunate to see it I got up at 5.30am Saturday 5th June 2010 and made a cup of tea and went outside for a smoke  and this thing was right in the sky to the nth east about 20deg and to the nth of mercury, the moon and Saturn were over head there was some cloud about and this spiral seemed to be behind some light cloud, I would suggest the object was not moving quickly but the cloud movement seemed to make it appear to be moving quickly,  by the time I  had run back inside to get my camera it had gone, it was a truly spectacular sight.

Saturday 18th July 2009 at around 1am I spotted a huge red fire-ball meteor while walking North-East toward Redhead Grange with a friend. I describe the direction of the meteor as travelling down from East to West low in the sky towards the ocean at Dudley lasting long enough for my friend to also see it after I exclaimed "a meteor"!

On Saturday 9th May 2009 at around 6.30am I spotted a very bright white and yellow meteor in the sky as I was driving North East from Charlestown towards the university. It had a tail and lasted for a while I was watching it for at least 10 seconds.

On Thursday 9 April 2009 at 5.21 while driving East in Mayfield Newcastle NSW I saw a bright meteor come down. It hit the ocean probably about 5 kilometers from shore. Bearing from Bull Street Mayfield near Kerr Street was 98 degrees. It appeared to be travelling North with a dip of about 80 degrees; in other words, it was coming almost straight down and was only visible for a second. It started as a bright yellow line and flared up to about one eighth of a degree across before vanishing behind low cloud into the sea. It was then bright day; if it had been dark this would have lit up the street.

Hi Everybody,

I was just wondering if there are any reports of a meteorite landing in
the vicinity of Hexham swamp Monday evening on 19/11/07?

One of the guys at work is convinced that he saw it make ground contact
followed shortly after by an impact noise.

Regards
Richard  Clarke

I was just enquiring as to whether or not anyone else had seen what I just saw.  I was out the front of my house at Warners Bay, I was looking east (south) at approximately 7:09pm and saw what I think was a meteor.  It was approximately 40 degrees in the sky.  It was a large streak (blue green at front white towards the rear) heading towards the ground, it lasted only a few seconds but was extremely bright it is hard to say how long it was.  I have never before seen anything like it before, I know a little about astromony, and have seen shooting stars before, but never a meteor.  This was the brightest thing I have ever seen.  It was like someone shot a very bright firework (however there was no noise).  Anyway I was just curious if anyone knows what it was.

Thanks

Tracey Evans.
