NOVOSPACE - an astro-photography
exhibition by local amateur astronomers.
"The vision of the
International Year of Astronomy is helping people rediscover
their
place in the universe with a strong emphasis on education,
public engagement and involvement from young people of all
communities."
The
International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009) celebrates the 400th
anniversary of the first recorded astronomical observations with
a
telescope
by
Galileo Galilei
and
the publication of Johannes Kepler's 'Astronomia
Nova' in the 17th century.
The Year was declared by the
62nd General Assembly of the United Nations.
A global scheme, laid out by the International
Astronomical Union (IAU),
has also been endorsed by UNESKO—the UN body responsible for
Educational, Scientific and Cultural matters. The opening
ceremony was held in Paris Jan 15-16 2009.

"If you've ever been outside on a clear dark night and lost
yourself in some star gazing, you might start to feel a bit
overwhelmed after a while ... as though we are a very small
speck in a vast universe and everything out there is so far
away!
Well, it is, relatively speaking - but as 2009 is the
International Year of Astronomy, the Newcastle Astronomical
Society are bringing the wonders of deep space a little closer
to us with an exhibition of the works of some local astro-photographers.
Natasha Schaad went to the exhibition opening and met some of
the folk for whom sitting up all night braving mozzies or the
cold is a real labour of love, and who are on first-name terms
with some of the most spectacular space objects. She spoke with
photographers Dennis Zambelis, David Hough and Andrew Catsaitis
about humble (as opposed to Hubble) technology, digital vs film
quality, and the magic of being in the right place at the right
time.
