This has been an interesting and enjoyable year for the society.  Although we did not have any external speakers, our members presented some interesting talks.

Our monthly viewing has been a hit and miss affair because of the weather.  Although we had a few successful viewing evenings at Patrick Barry's home backyard.

Also our "SIDEWALK ASTRONOMY" has been very successful with many people interested in further viewing.  Currently due to the availability of members and  the all-controlling Newcastle weather I had not been able to regularly advice people on a firm date for the next viewing.

I have tried to have the information on our website as soon as a firm date was fixed.

As most of you are aware, Colin Keay the founder of the society is leaving Newcastle to go to Sydney.  The Keays want to live near their daughter and grandchildren.  Lydia very kindly organised a farewell for Colin and his wife at her house.  I spoke to Colin on the phone as I was not able to go due to my spinal operation a few days before.  He was very touched by the society's farewell and the gift we presented him.  He wished us and the society a wonderful 2009 and thereafter.  We all wish him good health and happiness.

Next year 2009 is the International Year of Astronomy and as such NAS will be involved in viewing nights,   static displays and a presentation.  This augurs well for the society's standing with the general public and hopefully new members and a renewed interest in all things astronomical.

I would like to thank all the executive and members who have contributed their time and efforts for the society. Presentations by Denis Zambelis and George Livanos have been very enjoyable and well presented. Astrophotographs whether taken at home or at various Astrofests shown at the monthly meetings, by Scott Alder, David Hough and Allan Meehan have been excellent and generated a lot of interest in Astrophotography.

Contributions for Sidewalk astronomy from Chris Bond (our new Vice  President), Lydia Macokatic, Bill Abrahams, Graham Auld and myself have been very much appreciated.

Lydia Macokatic, Betty Macokatic, Peter Williams, and Jason Ryder presented a talk at a resort which was very well received.  Lydia presented a power point presentation of the talk to the NAS.

As we approach christmas and new year celebrations, I wish you all a very  "HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND A HEALTHY HAPPY NEW YEAR"

Kind regards and cheers
